The Squishmallows collector's guide 2026: sizes, squads, rarity, and how to find them
Squishmallows went from a 2017 launch to the single most recognised plush brand in North America in under seven years. With over 2,000 characters, each with a name, personality, and backstory, the brand created something no other plush company has: a universe people genuinely care about collecting.
If you're new to Squishmallows or looking to get serious about collecting, here's everything that matters.
Understanding sizes
Squishmallows come in standardised sizes, each with different use cases and collector dynamics:
3.5 inch (clip-on). Backpack clips, keychain size. Collectible format — like trading cards but soft. Lowest price point (£4–6).
5 inch. Desk and shelf display size. The most popular format for casual collectors. £6–10.
8 inch. The collector sweet spot. Big enough to hug, small enough for shelf display. This is where most serious collectors focus. £8–14.
12 inch. The standard "gift" size. Substantial without being overwhelming. £12–18.
16 inch. Pillow territory. Functional as actual cushions. £16–25.
20 inch and 24 inch. Statement pieces. These dominate a shelf and serve as room decor. £20–40.
The economics: Smaller sizes have higher per-unit collectibility (you can own more in less space) while larger sizes have better per-gram value (more squish per pound spent). Most experienced collectors focus on 5–8 inch for collecting and keep a few 16+ inch as comfort pieces.
The squad system
Squishmallows are released in themed "squads" — seasonal or thematic collections that group characters together. Understanding squads helps collectors anticipate releases and plan purchases.
Seasonal squads rotate through the calendar: Valentine's Day, Easter, Summer, Halloween, Holiday. These are time-limited and become harder to find after their season passes. Halloween Squishmallows consistently command the highest secondary market premiums.
Exclusive squads are released through specific retailers. Costco, Walmart, Target, Five Below, and Claire's each have exclusive characters you won't find elsewhere. Knowing which retailer carries which exclusives is essential collector knowledge.
Select Series is Squishmallows' premium line — more detailed embroidery, premium fabrics, and limited quantities. Higher price point but also higher resale potential.
Rarity tiers
Not all Squishmallows are created equal in terms of scarcity:
Common. Widely available, regularly restocked. The backbone of any collection. Examples: core characters like Cam the Cat or Gordon the Shark in standard colours.
Uncommon. Retailer exclusives or seasonal releases with moderate production runs. Available during their window but not permanently stocked.
Rare. Limited edition releases, convention exclusives, or characters that were discontinued after short production runs. These command premiums on secondary markets.
Ultra-rare. Prototype Squishmallows, first-run errors, recalled designs, or extremely limited event exclusives. These are true collector items that can sell for hundreds.
The 2017 originals in mint condition with tags are increasingly valuable — they're the "first editions" of the Squishmallows world.
How to spot counterfeits
As Squishmallows' popularity has grown, so have counterfeits. Key authenticity checks:
The tag. Genuine Squishmallows have a detailed hang tag with the character's name, personality description, and Kellytoy branding. The back includes care instructions and barcodes. Counterfeit tags are often printed at lower resolution with colour inaccuracies.
The fabric. Real Squishmallows use a distinctive spandex/polyester blend that has consistent stretch and return. Fakes often use cheaper fabric that feels thinner or doesn't bounce back the same way.
The embroidery. Authentic Squishmallows have clean, consistent embroidery — eyes, mouths, and details are symmetrical and precisely placed. Fakes frequently have uneven or sloppy embroidery.
The fill. Genuine Squishmallows have a specific marshmallow-like squish. Counterfeits are often overstuffed or understuffed, with a different tactile feel.
The seller. Buy from authorised retailers. Third-party marketplace sellers (especially on Facebook Marketplace, TikTok Shop, and Wish) are the primary source of counterfeits.
Where to find them in 2026
UK. Smyths Toys (largest selection), Claire's, Argos, Amazon UK, The Entertainer, select Primark stores.
US. Costco (exclusive characters, best value), Walmart, Target, Five Below (cheapest), Walgreens, Claire's, Amazon.
Online. Squishmallows.com (official), Amazon (verify seller), OwlandGoose.com (UK specialist).
Hunting tips. New stock typically arrives Tuesday–Thursday at major retailers. Mornings offer the best selection. Follow @squishmallows on Instagram for drop announcements. Join the r/squishmallow subreddit (350K+ members) for real-time stock alerts from the community.
The secondary market
Where to trade. Mercari, eBay, and Depop are the primary platforms. The r/BSTSquishmallows subreddit facilitates direct community trades. Facebook groups dedicated to Squishmallows trading are active and well-moderated.
Pricing guide. Common characters in current production sell at or below retail. Retired characters command 1.5–3× retail depending on demand. Rare exclusives and first-runs can reach 5–10× retail. Halloween and holiday exclusives from previous years typically appreciate.
Condition matters. Tag attached ("NWT" — new with tags) commands a significant premium over tag detached or used condition. Original packaging, where applicable, adds further value.
Starting a collection on a budget
Five Below (US) offers Squishmallows at £4–5 — the cheapest legitimate source. In the UK, Primark and Argos regularly discount older stock. End-of-season clearance at major retailers can yield finds at 50–70% off.
Focus on one squad or size. Trying to collect everything is financially impossible (2,000+ characters). Pick a theme — a favourite animal, a size, a colour palette, a season — and build depth rather than breadth.
Trade, don't just buy. The Squishmallows community is built on trading. Duplicates from blind bags and mystery packs become trading currency. Join trading groups and attend meetups — you'll fill gaps in your collection faster and cheaper than buying everything at retail.
Squishmallows succeeded because Jazwares understood something fundamental: people don't just want a soft toy, they want a character to care about. Every Squishmallow has a name, a birthday, a favourite hobby. They're not products — they're personalities. That emotional architecture is why the brand generates the loyalty it does, and why the collection never quite feels complete.
